Matt Houar’s Semi-Hollow Gunslinger

Matt Houar is a good friend of mine. He plays guitar and synths and does vocals for the Chico, California-based electronic rock duo Team Shark Week.

The body is made from a five-piece Swamp Ash back with a two-piece slip-matched Maple top. It has hollow “wings” like any Thinline. The neck is Hard Rock Maple with a fingerboard re-sawn from the same piece of wood. It will get a black lacquer top with tortoise shell binding, and the back and neck will just be clear coated. Pickups are still being decided, and there’s going to be a six-shooter inlay around the twelfth fret.

Here is a fun one! I’m building this guitar for Joseph Demaree of the Portland, OR-based band The Unit Breed. Joe is an incredible artist and a dear friend of mine. He actually helped considerably with the design of this one, including the stubby upper cutaway. I thought it looked kind of like a cross between a Jazzmaster and a Telecaster, so I nicknamed the guitar “Jazzimacaster.” Other than the unique body profile it also has stripped-down electronics, including a single Jazzmaster pickup in the middle position. The silver sparkle burst finish is well on it’s way but is going to be a lot of layers, so I’ll add some pictures of that when it’s finished. The JMDLX is essentially a cross between a Jazzmaster and a Telecaster Deluxe. I was asked with help designing the pickguard and it became so popular that I’ve since made three of these.
