Starblaster Meets Rickenbacker

Tuesday, October 26th, 2010

Here’s a new commission that I’ll be starting soon.  The customer wanted a semi-hollow body guitar with a Fender floating trem and Rickenbacker pickups.  Sort of a cross between a Fender and a Rick.  He liked my Starblaster design, so we’re going with it!

Oh Simplicity!

Thursday, October 7th, 2010

When you get right down to it, what is an electric guitar really? In the early years of the electric guitar, the question was simply “how can we make the guitar louder?”  Guitar players were trying to be heard on stages supporting big swing bands with brass instruments and their guitars were too hard to [...]

Paul Builds a Paul

Thursday, October 7th, 2010

Les Pauls were my first true guitar love affair. I was obsessed with them so much at one point that I frequently had dreams and nightmares about them. Usually at the same time. I would be in some odd situation as we so often are in dreams, and somehow I would get this Les Paul [...]

Conversion Necks For Shortscale Fenders

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

I get asked a lot about making conversion necks for different Fender guitars.  It seems like there are a lot of people who love certain things about various models of fenders, but can’t get on with that particular model’s scale length.  Some people prefer Fender’s standard scale length of 25.5″, as found on Strats, Teles, and [...]

The Oceanic v2.0 – The Oceana Prototype

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

I finished my first guitar in December of 2007. It was very nearly unplayable thanks to the narrow nut width, baseball bat thick neck, enormous frets, and poor overall setup. But it did have two things going for it. First was that it sounded good. After adjusting to the scrawny feel of the first position [...]

Matt Houar’s Semi-Hollow Gunslinger

Thursday, August 19th, 2010

Matt Houar is a good friend of mine.  He plays guitar and synths and does vocals for the Chico, California-based electronic rock duo Team Shark Week. The body is made from a five-piece Swamp Ash back with a two-piece slip-matched Maple top.  It has hollow “wings” like any Thinline.  The neck is Hard Rock Maple [...]

The Jaguar X

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

Recently I got to visit one of my biggest inspirations in the flesh.  Just a short distance from me is the home and work shop of none other than Saul Koll.  I’ve termed Saul “The Heavyweight Champion of Guitar Makers.”  There’s lots of guys out there who can build amazing guitars.  Then there’s slightly fewer [...]
